Singer in his novel "The King of the Fields," written injust three years before his death, examines religions (Christian, pagan, Jewish), myth, male-female relationships, sex, politics, and man, through a purported history of pre-medieval Poland/5(7).

This is a story about hunter-gatherers, villagers, farmers, heathens, pagans, krols and kniezes (kings and princes), marauders, plunderers, worshipers, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters -- taking place in prehistory Poland/5(17). Dina Rosenfeld has written many other children's books and is the editor-in-chief of Hachai Publishing.

She has based this book, nominally dealing with the month of Elul, on a parable of the Ba'al HaTanya. The story is about a shoemaker, a baker, a blacksmith and a tailor, who heard about a farmer's visit to see the king/5(5).

Singer's first novel in five years touches on many of his recurring themes (lust vs. reason, paganism vs. civilization, women as she-devils) but in a strange, largely unconvincing context: pre-medieval, primitive Poland, where assorted pagan tribes fight for control of rural neighborhoods, at odds over (among other things) whether to live by hunting or farming.

Get this from a library. The king of the fields. [Isaac Bashevis Singer] -- Singer's novel portrays an era of superstition and violence in a country emerging from the darkness of savagery. Set in Poland in the dark ages, it describes the brutality, prejudice and subjugation.

“Lev Grossman’s The Magician King is a fresh take on the fantasy-quest novel—dark, austere, featuring characters with considerable psychological complexity, a collection of idiosyncratic talking animals (a sloth who knows the path to the underworld, a dragon in the Grand Canal), and splendid set pieces in Venice, Provence, Cornwall, and Brooklyn.”.
