It is composed by a ~km-thick pile of massive and monotonous submarine flows of basalts, locally intruded by synvolcanic dikes and sills of dolerite. After extensive discussions on the taxonomy and classification, we finally named and described twenty-five new species and three new genera of ostracodes, essentially all from the latest Cretaceous. The modern insular shelf and slope of western Puerto Rico is characterized by reef carbonate and siliciclastic sedimentary environments controlled by the complex interplay of tectonic arching and faulting, vigorous erosion of the elevated island of Puerto Rico, fluvial incision and sedimentation pulses, reef growth, and rapid late Quaternary eustatic sea-level changes.

The Western Pontide Magmatic Belt consists of two different magmatic series corresponding to two distinct periods of intense volcanism, separated by a pelagic limestone marker horizon resting on a regional unconformity.

The first stage of magmatism and associated extensional tectonic regime prevailed in the region between the Middle Turonian and Early Santonian.

Initial testing of wet and dry sediments revealed that the machine records higher elemental concentrations in dry compared to wet sediments as it seems that the water molecules interfere with the X-ray beam on wet samples.
